Earl Nostrandt, Robert Harris and Ned Williams were still playing marbles on Myrtle Avenue under the small maple tree when their attention turned to the train whistle. They had never heard it blow so long. Lawrence McFall wrote of his grandfather’s experience:

The high banks where the train track came through the Betsy Rice Cut at Third Avenue made the whistle echo with an eerie scream. As the locomotive came nearer, the whistle continued its mournful sound. The lads jumped to their feet. They stood in awed silence. As the train passed within a few blocks, the youngsters knew that the menacing scream of that whistle surely meant something.
